The House

We are an English family providing bed and breakfast, and gite/apartment accommodation at Villa Lafabrègue, in the centre of the town of Prades, just a 5 minute walk from shops, restaurants and bars. The house was built in the 1870's and it sits in an acre of ground complete with swimming pool, at your disposal. All rooms have either ensuite shower rooms or bathrooms. Three of the rooms have terraces and views of the Pyrenees to either the West or South. It is situated in Prades, and is just a 5 minute walk into the town centre for restaurants and shops, and makes a perfect base for exploring the many offerings of the region. If you fancy bringing some food back to the house, you are more than welcome, we provide the necessary to enable you to enjoy lunch or dinner in the grounds or on your terrace. Free tea and coffee in the rooms, and down in the salon.

The Gites

There are two self contained apartments/gites, both completely refurbished in 2005. Both have central heating and wood burners, so are ideal for winter stays and skiing. Two Gites

A Short History

The house was built for the Lafabregues in 1873, a catalan banking family. It remained their home for over a hundred years. It was commandeered by the Germans in 1943, attacked by the Maquisard in July 1944 and taken by the allies in 1945. Pau (Pablo) Casals was a frequent visitor and is known to have practised and composed here after the war. Queen Elizabeth of Belgium, a musician herself also stayed here while playing in the Casals festival.

Prades

Prades is a typically French town with a population of 7000. It is 40 km west of Perpignan and lies at the foot of Mount Canigou, in the Pyrenees. It's halfway between the Mediterranean Sea and the Pyreneean ski-ing resorts, close to Andorra and only two and a half hours away from Barcelona. It has a pretty central square overlooked by the Eglise St Pierre restaurants and bars, and it hosts the local market on Tuesday and Saturday mornings.

Prades is also home to the famous Romanesque church of Saint Peter which dominates the square, and is just one of many Romanesque buildings in the region. Prades provides the setting for the Pau Casals music festival each summer. Its surroundings, rich in natural sites, are the starting point for a variety of excursions and numerous sporting and leisure time activities : Walking, canyoning, mountain biking, horse riding, potholing or just good old fashioned relaxing. The surrounding area provides plenty of opportunities to make this a fantastic holiday, whether it be a ride the 'Little Yellow Train' up into the Pyrenees, a trip to the beach, a walk around the animal park or a visit up to the St Martin du Canigou Abbey to name just a few.

The area has over 300 sunshine days a year, where a warm winter's day can be as much as 20 degrees centigrade.
