The ancient town of Prades is some 40 km from Perpignan in the Roussillon area of Southern France. It is a quiet, typically French town easily reached and exceptionally well located for a wide range of activities. The town is served by bus and train, but a car is undoubtedly the best way to gest around the area. The region has a very high sunshine record and with just enough rain. The winter months are considerably warmer than the UK also with lots of sunshine, in fact it is possible to eat out-of-doors during most months of the year. In the mountains (40 mins by car) it is cooler and the ski resorts generally have snow from December until Easter.
The shops are within easy walking distance and there are severals supermarkets. The Tuesday market under the trees in the center of town has the most wonderful array of fresh foods. Local people are friendly and helpful, they are happy to put up with imperfect French and practice their English. The town lies in a valley surrounded with peach apricot and apple orchards and there are extensive vineyards producing the well know wines of Roussillon. All of the "Caves" expect you to sample their products. Dances, celebrations and festivals abound in the summer months.
